Food lowers Paradise at lower Manhatten

Last week Yummi Design was on an tasty trip to New York. One of the pleasures of the US and especially New York, is the diversity and courage in the various kitchens and from the food producers which we can not match here in Denmark in the same scale. It is then a matter of taste where you want to go, how far you will go, but there are no doubt flavors enough for everyone in NYC.
….
Sunday we visited the New Amsterdam Market situated close to the touristy Pier 17, under the Lower Manhattan FDR Drive highway. This is where producers for Manhattan’s gourmet kitchens meet every Sunday and sell their lovely, tasty products. It’s a food lover paradise with all the local farm fresh produce selling handpicked heirloom tomatoes to made -to-go Maine lobster rolls. New Amsterdam Market showcases a wide selection of local farmers, artisans, purveyors, and independent small moms + pops food business. Each vendors are specialized in a particular food and are a connoisseur and more importantly passionate in what they do.
….
This Sunday was the “International Meats Local New Amsterdam Market”-festival. New Amsterdam Market and the Vendy Awards had decided to put together this sustainable food meet-n-eat. Five of the Vendy’s favorite vendors, including SolberPupusas, Guadalupe’s Tamales, Eggs Travaganza, A-Pou’s Taste, and Veronica’s Kitchen, got charged with recreating their iconic internationally flavored dishes using locally sourced ingredients and humanely raised meats. A super exciting and tasteful experience.
….
As you can see above, just as nice to walk around and sniff in the products and talk with the producers of the delicious foods, hear their story, feel their passion for the products. I love it all, fell for examble for ice cream maker A Bent Spoon, wauuu…: one scoop of chocolate with a gentle touch of lavender, all ingredients (like all the others at the New Amsterdam Market) sustainably, organic, from local producers, the best of the best, different and artisan. And a scoop of mint + crunchy cocoa nips. So yummi! There are many tasteful vendors at New Amsterdam Market, and I have to mention Luke’s Lobster which I would like to take home to replace a single hot dog vendor in Copenhagen: a fresh, sustainably caught Maine lobster and shrimp roll – to go – oh yes, please! Visit the vendors websites in the text above + below – enjoy…

I am often asked for recipes. I’m not good at remembering that kind and I’m not a chef ;o) my cooking is juggling of tastes and colors and very impulsive. But this salad for lunch was so fantastic that it was a picture worthy and very easy to share with you. Spring cabbage into very fine strips. Scattered throughout an entire plate. The one I have here is organic and in the most beautiful purple color, usually spring cabbage is light green. Lightly roast some sesame seeds and desiccated coconut in a frying pan (or variate with other grains and nuts). Let them cool down. Pour a good sweet creamy balsamico glace over the cabbage, sprinkle with salt. Sprinkle the crunchy seeds and desiccated coconut over. You can add toppings such as chillies and fresh coriander. Enjoy.

I have in recent months made a summer campaign for Ribena juice, a campaign to run in Denmark this summer. The job has resulted in a whole juice soaked family + testers of Ribena blackcurrant juice drink in all forms and a whole lot of funny hours in my studio with my designer partner Tenna. We just can not wait to see the final results.

I love these photographs. Laura Letinsky’s photos are full of edible experiences and storytelling. And I know it looks totally simple but it so hard to make photos like that look 100% casual and natural, it takes a lot of work to get there. Visit Laura Letinsky here.

The first time I came home from New York, I remember that I simply did not believe that we were about to land in Copenhagen Airport. The little village down there with the red tiled roofs just was not the capital of Denmark! We are small… but hey… not tiny! Everything is just smaller and much slower when you land after a trip over there. It’s time again – next week my friend and I are going to NYC. I’m finding inspiration into new, exciting places that taste and surprise. Not hard to find in NYC, but very difficult to choose and limit. We’re so excited. And by the few pictures above I can already feel the energy.

I am the easiest consumer in the world, if you just make my life a tiny bit easier with two children aged 3 and 4 years – then I’m all in. Aarstiderne (in English “Seasons”) is one of my really good friends. I get a box delivered from Aarstiderne every week with all children and adults can manage to eat of wonderful organic fruits + vegetables. In certain periods with no time for shopping I also get their meal boxes and love that I am being challenged with new recipes and interesting vegetables. This weekend we were off to the woods but ended up at Aarstiderne to refuel. There they got a hold of me again: freshly baked cake with white chocolate/marzipan and orange syrup (the photo above) who can say no to that!? A steaming well done espresso on the side, a bit farm yard shopping with the most delicious products, fresh air, playing in the hay with the kids + a swing for the smallest.  A few hours later were all tired, mmmm … that’s an easy Sunday.

One of the sites with interior design I keep returning to is Usine’s site -a restaurant with this great name “Usine le plus grand cafe du monde”A grand cafe for everyone! I have never visited it, only through these pictures, the link I have stored on my computer. It affects just something nostalgic and modern. A good atmosphere, where the old Philips building is the base and it keeps appearing when I am looking for colors and inspiration. I have to go to Eindhoven and visit the Grand Café Usine one day – feel the atmosphere and taste their kitchen.

We’ve taken a few days off here at Easter and was recently on the Glyptotek in Copenhagen, where the kids wondered a lot about why the Roman’s statues have no noses and Albert did not like the taste of the water in gold fish pond!? Then they fell a sleep in the bike trailer and we sneaked into Tobi’s cafe and enjoyed a Cortado and a Latte and a jubiiiii a newspaper (while we watched the sleeping kids!). Lovely vacation.
